People, Planet, Progress: The Edible Connection

Dr Tara Garnett

Food connects us to some of the most important environmental, societal and ethical issues of the day – climate change, biodiversity loss and water scarcity, hunger in conjunction with obesity, and inequality . These problems are increasingly well recognised and there is general agreement that something needs to be done – but there is far less consensus about what that ‘something’ should be. When it comes to addressing our food problems, different interest groups have different ideas about how whether these are technological problems requiring technological solutions, or whether there is a need for more fundamental changes in human behaviour and in the way human societies and economies are organised. In this talk Tara Garnett provides an overview of these issues and explores some of the underlying values that give rise to these different views on the ways forward.
